Prenatal Yoga & Movement
Pregnancy has a profound effect on the body, mind and spirit of birth givers. Every system of the body changes, demanding adjustments and shifts that can lead to heighten awareness. This awareness is rated not only in the body, but also the psyche of the pregnant person as they develop an internal relationship with their growing baby.
Yoga is a discipline particularly well-suited to developing this relationship. The essence of yoga is relationship - a profound union of the body, breath, mind and spirit. Pregnancy itself is a yogic state. During pregnancy a person’s life is joined on a constant basis with the life of their baby. Yoga helps deepen awareness and presence of the baby within which helps pregnant folks tap in to the profound state of receptivity - to grow, change and adapt themselves to the sacred miracle of life.
Yoga, at its core, is a practice of adaptation. As we move through the postures our efforts are combined with surrender through breath. We shape shift ourselves on all levels as we move through the practice. Yoga helps prepare pregnant people to meet the profound changes that happen during pregnancy and birth and moving to parenthood with an open heart, willing to embrace and except the present moment. Yoga is more than exercise: it integrates the whole self.
The Western world often views birth from a medical perspective. The wholeness of the birth experience is whittled down to a series of medical interventions and technology. Often people’s knowledge about themselves, their bodies and their feelings are overlooked. Birth givers have lost this connection to their instinctive selves and have been uprooted from the wholeness of the birth experience.
We can begin to shape shift this paradigm through yoga. Yoga can help people experience their truest nature. This helps them wholeheartedly embody their pregnancy, birth and journey into parenthood. When people feel embraced by their own inner knowingness, they are able to trust their own instincts and will follow those instincts into birth. This process will continue to unfold as they integrate parenthood into their being.
This does not necessarily mean that yoga will give you a “natural” birth. On your birth journey, you will not know what awaits you. Each birth experience is different and each person will bring their own unique way of walking that journey. What yoga can do is help birth givers face those decisions with trust and confidence, from a place of inner connection, rather than being led blindly by outside forces or circumstances.
